Causes of hemroids

Hemroids are caused by 2 factors.
  • Weakness of the walls of the anorectal veins. Weakness is usually hereditary, and also may be caused by hormonal changes e.g. during pregnancy.
  • Increased pressure inside the anorectal veins. Increased pressure is caused mainly by excessive straining as in constipation from various causes, diarrhea, lifting heavy objects and habitual straining at bowel movements.

What are hemroids?

“Hemroids” is a common misspelling of the term “hemorrhoids”. It is so common that it should not be considered a misspelling. It is rather a simplified version of the more complicated scientific term, so it will be the most commonly used term throughout this site. I think that the term “hemorrhoids” is one of the most commonly misspelled terms in English with a very long list of misspelled variations with new ones appearing all the time. Examples from the list are hemmoroids, hemorroids, hemmroids, hemoroids, hemeroids, hemmeroids, hemorhoids.

Hemroids are simply enlarged anorectal veins due to weakness of their walls and increased pressure inside them. There are 2 sets of anorectal veins; internal hemorrhoidal and external hemorrhoidal veins. So, according to which set of veins is enlarged, we have 2 types of hemorrhoids, internal and external hemroids.

Why do hemroids occur? What are the caused of hemroids?

As mentioned above, hemroids are caused by 2 factors acting together.

  1. Weakness of the anorectal veins leading to their enlargement. This weakness is mainly hereditary. Also, weakness may be caused by other factors like hormonal changes during pregnancy, obesity and old age. However, not every person with hereditary weakness of the anorectal veins develop hemroids, because there is the more important role of the second factor.
  2. Increased pressure inside the veins. This is the more important and constant factor, as at least one cause of increased pressure is almost always present in every case of hemroids. Caused of increased pressure inside the rectal veins include the following.
  • Constipation. This is the most common single cause of hemroids. Constipation leads to straining which elevates the pressure in the veins. The most common cause of constipation is habitual constipation due to dietary factors as consuming big amounts of low-fiber foods and heavily refined foods and insufficient water intake.
  • Straining due to other causes as diarrhea, excessive use of laxatives, lifting heavy objects, severe coughing, excessive straining in the toilet.
  • Liver diseases causing portal hypertension.

How do I know if I have hemroids? What are the symptoms of hemroids?

Hemroids symptoms differ according to the type of hemroids.

  • In internal hemroids, the most common symptom of hemroids is rectal bleeding with bowel movement, which may be in the form of blood over stools or on the toilet paper. The most important criteria of bleeding hemroids is the bright-red color of the blood.Rectal pain is usually absent or minimal in cases of internal hemroids unless infection or thrombosis occurs. Also, no mass can be felt in internal hemroids, unless the hemroids have prolapsed through the anus. This condition is called prolapsed internal hemroids.
  • In external hemroids, the most common complaint is rectal pain during bowel movements. A certain degree of rectal discomfort or pain is also present all the time.Other symptoms include anal itching due to irritation of the hemroids by stools. The hemroids can be felt as a painful hard mass around the anus.

How can I get rid of hemroids?

  • Effective hemroids treatment should be centered on reversal of the causes specially constipation and other causes of straining.
    This
  • Symptomatic treatment like anesthetic or analgesic creams or suppositories is usually ineffective in treating hemroids.
  • Herbal remedies like Comfrey root powder and Horse chestnut, seem to be more effective and more safe compared to traditionally used creams and suppositories.
  • Recently used alternative formulas as Venapro are proved to be the most effective
preparations available for hemroids treatments .
  • Non-surgical and surgical procedures performed to get rid of hemroids have some disadvantages, making most doctors reserve them to the very severe cases which persist for long time and can not be cured by other methods.
