Medical Hemroids Treatment

Medical Hemroids Treatment

Medical conservative treatment should be tried first in most cases before shifting to operative or non-operative procedures. Conservative treatment cures most 1st and 2nd degree hemroids and also many cases of 3rd and 4th degree hemroids. Other invasive measures should be reserved to cased to responding to a one month of conservative treatment.

Avoid Straining.

Because straining specially from constipation is the most common cause of hemroids, relieving straining is necessary for treatment and prevention of hemroids.

  • Avoid constipation. As constipation is the most common cause of hemroids, treating constipation is necessary for both the cure and prevention of recurrence of hemroids.

  • Take high-fiber diet. Consume large amounts of fruits, vegetables, whole grain bread and cereals. Limit the amount of low-fiber diet as ice cream, soft drinks, and white bread. High-fiber diet contains more than 25 grams per day compared to 8-15 grams in the average American diet.
  • Drink a plenty of water. Drink 8-10 cups of water daily.
  • Avoid alcohol and coffee. These cause dehydration which caused constipation.
  • Stool softeners may be taken as bran and psyllium. However, avoid laxatives to avoid diarrhea which also causes straining.
  • Exercise regularly. This helps smooth bowel movements and prevents constipation.
  • Avoid other forms of straining.

  • Avoid holding stools, avoid reading in the toilet.  Also, avoid prolonged sitting in the toilet.
  • Avoiding lifting heavy objects and holding breath.
  • Avoid prolonged sitting or standing in the same position.

Local non-medical measures.

  • Apply ice for 10 minutes followed by hot foments for 20 minutes.
  • Sitz baths are taken several times daily. In Sitz bath, the area is soaked with warm water for 20 minutes.
  • Avoid wiping or rubbing the area after a bowel movement.
  • Avoid soap and bath washes which contain irritant chemicals.
  • Use cotton undergarments to help absorb moisture and sweating.

Local medical measures.

Local medicines including creams, ointments and suppositories are ineffective and not recommended in hemroids treatment. Local hydrocortisone may be used in hemroids to decrease bleeding, but avoid using them for a long time.
